THE WISDOM OF THE BEATLES

Be inspired by the most iconic band of our generation.

Beautiful Boy

Jun 27, 2025

Line art of a father tenderly holding his sleeping son, surrounded by flowing musical notes. Evokes deep parental love and calm from John Lennon’s “Beautiful Boy.”

Released on the "Double Fantasy" album just weeks before his tragic death, John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)" stands as one of his most tender compositions. Written for his son Sean, this lullaby-like track captures the important connection between parent and child.

Prior to the release of “Double Fantasy”, John had retreated from public life for five years to focus on raising Sean. The song emerged during a period of remarkable healing for John. After years of struggling with his own childhood trauma (as we explored earlier this month), he found unexpected wholeness through fatherhood.

For today's generation balancing careers, personal fulfillment, and family responsibilities, Lennon's example offers a powerful reminder. True connection often requires courageous choices about priorities.

Sadly, John's decision to nurture Sean, stands in stark contrast to his relationship with Julian, his son from his first marriage, who likely felt abandoned by his father - repeating the family trauma that had such an impact on John.

Nobody is perfect and John seems to have matured greatly in his thirties. The song also touchingly acknowledges life's uncertainty with a gentle reminder about plans and expectations. John's wisdom about the unpredictable nature of life takes on additional poignancy given his untimely death shortly after the album's release.

Today, I will prioritize being fully present with the children in my life. I'll recognize that these connections require intentional choices about my time and attention.
