Dark Horse
Being underestimated can be an advantage; let them doubt you
April 23

Hidden potential often surprises those who bet against you. George released this title track during his troubled 1974 American tour, his voice ravaged by exhaustion and illness. Critics savaged his vocal performance, but the song itself is powerful, describing someone who arrives unexpectedly and upsets all predictions.
Overlooked competitors often go further because nobody sees them coming. The song celebrates being dismissed, suggesting that low expectations create freedom to work without scrutiny. While everyone watches the favorites, dark horses train in obscurity and arrive ready when it matters.
Real achievement belongs to those who keep working while others doubt. George spent years in John and Paul's shadow, writing songs the band rejected, waiting for chances to contribute. Rather than becoming bitter, he used that time to develop his craft. When the opportunity came, he was ready.
Skepticism from others can fuel determination in ways that encouragement sometimes doesn't. George used this perceived slight to motivate his growth. The song suggests that proving people wrong carries its own satisfaction.
Everyone loves an upset, a dark horse winning against all odds. Being counted out doesn't determine outcomes, but it can fuel hard work and determination to prove the detractors wrong.
Today, I will use one instance of being underestimated as fuel for my determination rather than evidence of my limitations.
Where in your life has being dismissed actually freed you to work without pressure? How might you use others' doubt as motivation rather than letting it become your own belief?
Join April's New Beginnings Lessons
When George Harrison walked out of a contentious business meeting in 1969 and into Eric Clapton's garden, he discovered the strategic power of renewal. The song he wrote that afternoon, "Here Comes the Sun," would become The Beatles' most-streamed track and a masterclass in navigating transitions. Throughout April, we'll explore how their approach to new beginnings, strategic retreats, and turning endings into opportunities provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating organizational transitions, career pivots, and transforming uncertainty into growth in every area of life.
