Fixing a Hole
Sometimes we need to create a safe space or sanctuary to get in touch with our deepest thoughts and feelings
September 23

Home renovation taught Paul McCartney something deeper than carpentry skills. While restoring his Scottish farmhouse in 1967, he discovered that physical repair work was actually soul work in disguise. This hands-on experience inspired "Fixing a Hole," where Paul explores creating safe spaces—both literal and metaphorical—where we can be ourselves.
Our repairs are a metaphor for the ongoing work we must do to create an internal sanctuary where our thoughts can wander freely without judgment. The holes we're fixing aren't always problems to solve but spaces to inhabit we can reflect on our decisions and relationships.
Letting our minds wander creates unexpected breakthroughs. The song's meditative quality reflects the peace that comes from self-knowledge. Paul's farmhouse became more than restored property; it became a place where he could get in touch with his inner-most thoughts and feelings.
Every person needs a sanctuary where their authentic self can emerge safely, complete with contradictions, questions, and beautiful imperfections.
Today, I will create one small space—physical or emotional—where I can be genuinely myself without performance or apology.
Where in your life do you need to stop fixing yourself and start accepting who you authentically are? What would change if you had a true sanctuary for your unedited thoughts?

When John Lennon admitted "Help! I need somebody" in 1965, he shattered expectations for rock stars by choosing vulnerability over invincibility. That radical honesty revealed how The Beatles understood that acknowledging struggle doesn't diminish strength, it creates the foundation for sustainable success. Throughout March, we'll explore how their approach to mental wellness, emotional honesty, and inner refuge provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating burnout, anxiety, and unprecedented pressure in every area of life.
