Handle With Care

Even the strongest among us need careful handling

April 14

Fragile box or package with "Handle With Care" label, gentle hands cradling it carefully, simple protective gesture

Seeing a simple phrase on a packing box inspired this Traveling Wilburys song written by George. He thought "Handle With Care" was the perfect sentiment for what he wanted to express with his new band. George had gathered his friends Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne to form the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys.

People often carry unexpected fragility beneath a confident exterior. The song's vulnerable lyrics about needing gentle treatment contrast beautifully with the superstar lineup. These were rock legends at the peak of their powers, yet here they admitted to feeling delicate, breakable, in need of care.

Inviting mutual support creates its own strength. Each Wilbury brought individual genius, but together they created something new. The collaboration worked because they approached each other with the care the title suggests, respecting each other's contributions and limitations.

Knowing how George felt underappreciated with The Beatles, he wanted all of the Wilburys to be on equal footing. He wanted to make sure he was handling them all with care. Even rock legends feel fragile sometimes.

Expressing the need for careful handling resonated with the public. The song's enduring appeal comes from this brave admission that we all, regardless of apparent strength, sometimes need people to handle us with care.

Today, I will approach one person with extra care, remembering that strength and vulnerability coexist in everyone.

Who in your life might need more gentle handling than their strong exterior suggests? How might you be needing care you're afraid to request?

Join April's New Beginnings Lessons

When George Harrison walked out of a contentious business meeting in 1969 and into Eric Clapton's garden, he discovered the strategic power of renewal. The song he wrote that afternoon, "Here Comes the Sun," would become The Beatles' most-streamed track and a masterclass in navigating transitions. Throughout April, we'll explore how their approach to new beginnings, strategic retreats, and turning endings into opportunities provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating organizational transitions, career pivots, and transforming uncertainty into growth in every area of life.
