Hey Bulldog

Sometimes appreciation arrives late - growth means recognizing value in hindsight

March 2

Throwaway sessions sometimes produce unexpected treasures. The Beatles recorded "Hey Bulldog" almost as an afterthought during the "Lady Madonna" promo filming. It received no critical acclaim initially, just another track tossed off during their productive period. Yet over the years, appreciation grew until some now cite it as one of their best rockers.

Appreciation delayed is sometimes sweeter. We often fail to recognize the value of people, moments, or experiences until hindsight provides perspective. The ability to look back years later and see what we missed initially marks genuine growth and maturity. What felt ordinary at the time becomes extraordinary through the lens of experience.

During the session, John and Paul started barking at each other playfully, and that spontaneous joy made it onto the final track. It's raw, loud, and full of energy, a reminder that the band could still have fun even as tensions mounted. Sometimes the best work emerges when you stop taking everything so seriously and just play.

Today, I will recognize one thing I previously undervalued, acknowledging that delayed appreciation is still meaningful.

What person, experience, or opportunity did you fail to appreciate until much later? How has your ability to recognize value in hindsight shown your growth?

When John Lennon admitted "Help! I need somebody" in 1965, he shattered expectations for rock stars by choosing vulnerability over invincibility. That radical honesty revealed how The Beatles understood that acknowledging struggle doesn't diminish strength, it creates the foundation for sustainable success. Throughout March, we'll explore how their approach to mental wellness, emotional honesty, and inner refuge provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating burnout, anxiety, and unprecedented pressure in every area of life.
