I'll Follow the Sun
Sometimes leaving gracefully is kinder than staying past your time
May 5

Goodbyes are hard and we all deal with them differently. Paul’s approach in “I’ll Follow the Sun”, is optimistic and hopeful in the face of loss. Contrast this song with John’s breakup song from the same album, “I’m a Loser”. Paul’s is bright and positive, while John’s is brooding and petulant.
Optimism shines through this song, even in the face of a breakup. This is part of The Beatles secret formula; John and Paul often presented the yin and yang of issues. We’ve all had moments of self-confident optimism just as we have all had moments of self-doubt. Both are valid emotional responses to a failed relationship.
Naturally, the fear of loss makes endings feel like failures. Paul's wisdom reframes the departure as a new beginning. He is following his own light, trusting that doing so will work out. There is a profound difference between running away and walking forward, and the best endings tend to involve the latter.
Even when the ending of a relationship is inevitable, it can be handled with grace. "I'll Follow the Sun" is not a judgement of others. It looks toward the future, following the light of a new path. The theme of embracing the future is one Paul would return to again and again throughout his career. This song is an early glimpse of that wisdom.
Today, I will honestly examine one area of my life where holding on past its natural end might be preventing me from following my own light.
What relationship, habit, or chapter might be asking to be released gracefully? How could letting go with love create space for something new to grow?
Join April's New Beginnings Lessons
When George Harrison walked out of a contentious business meeting in 1969 and into Eric Clapton's garden, he discovered the strategic power of renewal. The song he wrote that afternoon, "Here Comes the Sun," would become The Beatles' most-streamed track and a masterclass in navigating transitions. Throughout April, we'll explore how their approach to new beginnings, strategic retreats, and turning endings into opportunities provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating organizational transitions, career pivots, and transforming uncertainty into growth in every area of life.
