Stuart Sutcliffe, often called "the fifth Beatle", was born on this day in 1940, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was John's best friend from Liverpool College of Art. Stu was a talented artist who represented a crucial crossroads in The Beatles' journey from obscure Liverpool teenagers to global phenomenon. When John convinced him to spend the prize money he won in an art contest on a bass guitar and join the fledgling band, neither could have anticipated how this decision would shape music history.
Though not naturally musical, Stu brought something equally valuable: artistic vision and effortless cool. His brooding style, tight jeans, dark glasses, and the iconic swept-back haircut that the others would later adopt, helped transform The Beatles from amateur skiffle players into the leather-clad rockers who captivated Hamburg.
Unfortunately, Stu's story ended far too soon. On April 10, 1962, just before the Beatles achieved worldwide fame, he died suddenly from a brain hemorrhage at just 21 years old. John, who had often masked his deep affection for Stu behind teasing and bravado, was devastated. Stu helped shape the journey but wouldn't be there to see the triumph. “In My Life”, John’s masterpiece, was inspired by Stu (and the other loved ones John had lost along the way).
Today, I'll remember a friend or colleague who played a significant role in my life's journey, even if just for a season.
