THE WISDOM OF THE BEATLES
Be inspired by the most iconic band of our generation.
Oh Darling!
Authentic emotion requires real investment
February 22

Never take the easy route when you want to maximize your impact. Paul wanted to sound like he'd been screaming this song for a week, so he came into the studio each morning to perform it until his voice was properly shredded. The raw desperation in his vocal is completely intentional, a throwback to the 1950s rockers he loved as a teenager.
Every take pushed Paul further into a territory that physically hurt. He was chasing that raw sound that would match the desperation and devotion of the lyrics. This connects to broader lessons about meaningful work: sometimes achieving what you truly want requires pushing yourself past what is comfortable into places that challenge you.
Vulnerability can't be manufactured; it emerges from willingness to feel what you're expressing. The desperation of the song needed to be matched with heartfelt vocals. Paul nailed it with one of his most powerful vocal deliveries, conveying desperation in every note.
Even though this is one of Paul’s best vocal performances, John once said it was the one song Paul wrote that he thought he should have sung. It was always hard to know when to take John seriously. The song is out of his vocal range and Paul’s performance was stunning. But in a lower key, using the same raspy voice that sang “Twist and Shout”, John’s would have sounded equally great!
Real impact means putting in the hard work. This song reminds us that the work often hurts while we're doing it, but that hurt can become the source of its power.
Today, I will push myself past comfortable limits in one area where I've been holding back.
What genuine feeling have you been protecting yourself from fully expressing? How might real investment in vulnerability transform your impact?
Join March's Metal Health Lessons
When John Lennon admitted "Help! I need somebody" in 1965, he shattered expectations for rock stars by choosing vulnerability over invincibility. That radical honesty revealed how The Beatles understood that acknowledging struggle doesn't diminish strength, it creates the foundation for sustainable success. Throughout March, we'll explore how their approach to mental wellness, emotional honesty, and inner refuge provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating burnout, anxiety, and unprecedented pressure in every area of life.
