Rewind Forward

You can't change the past, but you can choose how you face the future

April 19

Clock or timeline with arrows pointing both directions, person walking forward while looking ahead, past represented as fading footprints behind

Ringo released this track in 2023 at age 83, looking simultaneously backward and ahead. The title captures the impossibility of reversing what's already happened while reminding us to move toward what's next. Time moves in one direction, but our relationship with it remains flexible. Every moment we spend dwelling on the unchangeable past is a moment stolen from the available future.

Impossible though it seems, we try to rewind constantly, replaying conversations we can't redo, rehearsing different choices we can't make. The song acknowledges this human tendency while gently redirecting our attention forward.

Now, in his eighties, Ringo models how to age with grace and forward focus. The song doesn't pretend the past doesn't matter but refuses to let it determine the present. His willingness to keep creating, performing, and engaging proves that the future remains open regardless of how much past you've accumulated.

Gratitude for the past allows us to view what’s next with excited anticipation. The song is a gentle reminder that the only moment requiring your attention is this one, and the only direction available is forward.

Opportunity waits ahead, not behind. Wisdom accepts what cannot be altered while embracing what can be chosen. The gentle acceptance in Ringo's voice shows someone who's stopped wishing he could rewind and while appreciating that he can still move forward.

Today, I will release one regret about my past and redirect that energy toward one possibility in my future.

What unchangeable past are you still trying to fix instead of accepting? How might making peace with what was create energy for what could be?

Join April's New Beginnings Lessons

When George Harrison walked out of a contentious business meeting in 1969 and into Eric Clapton's garden, he discovered the strategic power of renewal. The song he wrote that afternoon, "Here Comes the Sun," would become The Beatles' most-streamed track and a masterclass in navigating transitions. Throughout April, we'll explore how their approach to new beginnings, strategic retreats, and turning endings into opportunities provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating organizational transitions, career pivots, and transforming uncertainty into growth in every area of life.
