THE WISDOM OF THE BEATLES

Be inspired by the most iconic band of our generation.

Standing Still

Doing nothing results in nothing; take a proactive step each day to live life fully

Some lessons are most powerfully delivered by the people we least expect to deliver them. Ringo, the Beatle most often underestimated, released this hidden gem as a reminder that a life of passive waiting is not actually a life at all. The title sounds like a description of stillness, but the song's message points in exactly the opposite direction. To stand still, it argues, is to choose invisibility over engagement, comfort over growth, safety over vitality.

Taking the road of least resistance has a seductive logic. Nothing ventured, nothing lost. But Ringo, who survived serious childhood illness, spent years being told he was replaceable, and yet outlasted every critic through sheer persistence, understood that nothing ventured also means nothing gained. The life you want does not arrive because you waited patiently for it. It arrives because you walked toward it, imperfectly and consistently, one day at a time.

Inertia is the enemy dressed as caution. It convinces us that staying in place is somehow safer than moving forward, when in reality it is simply a slower way of losing ground. Ringo's country-inflected delivery in this song carries the warmth of someone who has made peace with his own missteps and wants to save others the time it took him to learn this. You are allowed to move. In fact, you are required to.

Life, the song insists, rewards those who engage with it directly. Every day offers a small invitation to do something slightly more than you did yesterday. Whether it is a conversation you have been avoiding, a project you have been postponing, or a relationship you have been neglecting, movement creates momentum. Standing still does not.

Let Ringo's gentle wisdom serve as the nudge you needed today. Take a step. Do the thing. Begin.

Today, I will take one proactive step toward something I have been waiting on, recognizing that a single intentional action is worth more than a week of careful planning.

Where in your life are you standing still when you know you should be moving? What is the one small step that would break the inertia and start building the momentum you need?

Join April's New Beginnings Lessons

When George Harrison walked out of a contentious business meeting in 1969 and into Eric Clapton's garden, he discovered the strategic power of renewal. The song he wrote that afternoon, "Here Comes the Sun," would become The Beatles' most-streamed track and a masterclass in navigating transitions. Throughout April, we'll explore how their approach to new beginnings, strategic retreats, and turning endings into opportunities provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating organizational transitions, career pivots, and transforming uncertainty into growth in every area of life.
