The Night Before

Not every sudden change comes with explanation - sometimes you must accept and move on

March 29

A figure watching another person walk away into the distance, their form getting smaller. No answer coming back. Acceptance beginning to form in the watching figure's posture. Clean lines suggesting separation without drama. Resignation and release.

Lost in confusion about what changed overnight, Paul wrote "The Night Before" trying to understand how warmth suddenly turned cold. The energy is urgent, almost desperate, capturing that frantic need to make sense of inexplicable shifts.

Insisting on explanations doesn't always produce them. Sometimes people's feelings change and they can't or won't articulate why. The song captures that helpless feeling when everything seemed fine and then suddenly wasn't, leaving you scrambling for reasons.

Expecting rational explanations for emotional shifts often leads nowhere. Paul presses for answers throughout the song, but the desperation itself suggests he's not getting satisfying responses. Some changes in human behavior resist logical explanation.

Surrendering the need to understand everything brings peace. This early composition shows Paul grappling with what he'd later accept: sometimes people just change their minds, their feelings shift, and you'll never fully understand why.

Today, I will accept one unexplained change without demanding a satisfying reason, trusting that moving forward matters more than understanding everything.

What change in someone's behavior toward you have you been desperately trying to explain? How might accepting that you may never fully understand actually help you move on?

Join March's Metal Health Lessons

When John Lennon admitted "Help! I need somebody" in 1965, he shattered expectations for rock stars by choosing vulnerability over invincibility. That radical honesty revealed how The Beatles understood that acknowledging struggle doesn't diminish strength, it creates the foundation for sustainable success. Throughout March, we'll explore how their approach to mental wellness, emotional honesty, and inner refuge provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating burnout, anxiety, and unprecedented pressure in every area of life.
