Love sometimes means setting boundaries
January 20

True love doesn't always feel comfortable. Ringo has always been open about his past struggles with alcohol and how getting sober saved his life and marriage. This song reflects that hard-won wisdom: sometimes love means holding firm boundaries and demanding better from yourself and others.
Uncomfortable honesty can create necessary change. Barbara gave Ringo tough love when he needed it most, refusing to enable his drinking. That felt harsh in the moment but was the most loving thing she could do. Facing your own patterns requires someone who cares enough to be honest.
Finally sober, Ringo could see what genuine love looked like. It wasn't about making things easy for loved ones, which can enable destructive behavior. Real love holds people accountable while still supporting them. It sets boundaries that protect both people in a relationship. It demands honesty even when lying would be more comfortable.
Firm boundaries express love, not rejection. This song celebrates that mature understanding, recognizing that sometimes the most loving response is the one that feels hardest in the moment. When we confuse enabling with kindness, we participate in someone's decline. True love has the courage to say "no" when "yes" would cause harm.
Today, I will practice tough love in one situation where enabling or avoiding has been masquerading as kindness.
Where have you been avoiding necessary boundaries because you confused enabling with love? Who needs your tough love right now, including possibly yourself?
Join April's New Beginnings Lessons
When George Harrison walked out of a contentious business meeting in 1969 and into Eric Clapton's garden, he discovered the strategic power of renewal. The song he wrote that afternoon, "Here Comes the Sun," would become The Beatles' most-streamed track and a masterclass in navigating transitions. Throughout April, we'll explore how their approach to new beginnings, strategic retreats, and turning endings into opportunities provides actionable frameworks for leaders navigating organizational transitions, career pivots, and transforming uncertainty into growth in every area of life.
